Machine Learning for Peace

Funding for the Machine Learning for Peace (MLP) was terminated in February 2025 following the Trump Administration’s cancellation of the Department of Defense Minerva Research Initiative and dismantling of the United States Agency for International Development.

Our final set of data and forecasting updates covers events through November 2024. In the coming weeks, the MLP team will complete one last data update extending through December 2024, which will be made publicly available via our Github repository.

Machine Learning for Peace (MLP) brings together machine learning and data analysis to support efforts in strengthening democracy and responding to crises around the world. MLP’s digital tools collect and analyze large amounts of information on political events in over 60 countries. This is done by processing millions of articles from more than 300 local, regional, and international news outlets, published in nearly 40 different languages. Using this infrastructure, MLP provides current and reliable insights on recent and past trends, while also building forecasts that help predict how political and social conditions might change in the near future.

We provide a variety of interactive digital tools that activists, policymakers and researchers can use to explore data and forecasts on areas such as civic space and foreign influence, including the Civic Space Early Warning System (CSEWS), which has provided advanced warning of major political events in recent months. Our tools also provide data on environmental events, offering broader coverage and additional insights.

These updates feature summaries of significant events identified by our system since the previous report, enabling monitoring conditions across countries. We also include reviews of recent forecasts and previous anticipated developments in the coming months. The subscription provides access to timely insights that can guide strategic planning and decision-making.
